At Step Away clients voluntarily enter a safe and secure facility in which an intensive substance abuse rehabilitation programme is the cornerstone of the client’s daily activities.

Often we meet clients who have attempted out-patient rehabs in PE but have found themselves relapsing into substance abuse thereafter. Most of these clients achieve success however through the Step Away Treatment Centre’s residential programme which is situated in Bluewater Bay, Port Elizabeth.

Clients who require detoxification services due to health concerns regarding withdrawal also benefit from our residential programme, as detoxification services can be arranged as part of our residential rehab treatment programme.

After detoxification (if necessary), patients undergo an intensive, daily substance treatment regimen to educate themselves concerning the disease of addiction in a supportive, immersive environment.

Step Away rehab in PE offers a safe, structured environment that is far removed from the client’s stressful circumstances that promote or fuel the urge to use.

Because these factors are removed from the client’s daily environment, they can begin to focus on learning life skills that had previously been hampered due to their addiction.

Because of the intensity of the programme and care at Step Away it is ideal for clients who have either unsuccessfully attempted to overcome their addiction by attending out-patient substance abuse programmes or the clients who have identified that they need immediate intervention in their substance addiction and want to ‘do it right’ the first time.

The level of care necessary for each client will be assessed by an in-care professional who is qualified in the medical or counselling profession and an individual care plan will be determined for each client.

The staff at the Step Away residential treatment centre realise how daunting it is to come to a decision to voluntarily admit oneself to an alcohol and drug rehab programme.

Although the residential programme is intense, it is also highly emotionally supportive to our clients and a holistic approach is followed throughout the treatment.

For this reason, Step Away rehabilitation treatment centre also puts a high emphasis on the family of the clients and making the family part of the client rehabilitation process by offering family counselling and weekend visitation.

The client will also benefit from support from a ‘therapeutic community’ in the Step Away residential treatment programme – a community of clients who support one another through the substance abuse treatment by encouraging one another to stay on task.

In addition to the other differentiators of long-term residential care, it is this camaraderie that is gained through empathy and shared experience that often helps our clients overcome addiction in the long term.
